And who said that modern art isn’t alive and kicking in the Haute-Loire ?

French artist Georges Pellisier is never too far from his studio in St Bonnet Le Froid, Haute Loire, where he produces the majority of his artwork.

"Just try keeping me away" he smiles as he climbs over some welding equipment to apply the finishing touches to a new metallic sculpture.

The studio is bursting with sculptures, paintings and colour – not to mention some intricate jewellery compositions placed unceremoniously on top of a black Hi-Fi system, which is booming out the latest techno hit…

" The jewellery is a sort of family tradition, " he shouts as he tries to take off his welding mask and turn down the music at the same time.

"My grandfather started making his own jewellery up here a long time ago, and I’m taking it into the 21st Century…."

Getting into an art discussion with Georges is a serious business, especially on his home ground. One’s eyes are constantly darting from one vibrant painting to another, while the artist flails his arms around enthusiastically explaining his various techniques. The use of Colour and Volume are key to Georges Pellisier’s work, always painted horizontally on wooden surfaces.

The titles of his paintings are of great importance and are an integral part of the long intellectual process that precedes each composition. Georges allows his projects to grow and slowly ripen in his mind before throwing himself into the creative process with abandon.
